Values
Why Your Values Matter in Therapy
Your values are the compass that tells you whether your life actually feels like yours. When your day-to-day choices line up with what matters most to you, even hard days feel meaningful. When they don't, you can feel restless, resentful, or stuck, even if everything looks fine from the outside.
A lot of anxiety, self-doubt, and burnout comes from living according to values that were handed to you (by family, culture, or old expectations) rather than the ones that are actually yours.
Values Are a Direction, Not a Destination
Something I remind clients often: a value isn't a goal you finish and check off. "Being a present parent" or "living with honesty" isn't something you achieve once, it's a direction you keep choosing, moment to moment. That takes the pressure off getting it perfect and puts the focus back on showing up for what matters, even imperfectly.
Homework: Values Clarification Exercise
Set aside 10 quiet minutes this week. Write down answers to these questions, without overthinking:
When have I felt most like myself in the last year? What was I doing?
If no one else would ever know, what would I still want to spend my time on?
What is one value I've been ignoring lately, and what's one small way I could honor it this week?
Bring your answers to our next session. We'll use them to help guide your goals and make sure the work we're doing actually points toward the life you want, not just the one you think you're supposed to want.
